What is the difference between PE & PVC stretch film?

PE stretch film

The main material, polyethylene, is "Polyethylene" in English and has good thermoplasticity and transparency. During the processing and synthesis process, the stretch film is roughly divided into three types of PE stretch films due to different synthesis processes, such as LDPE, HDPE, and LLDPE.

PE stretch film has extremely strong toughness and can maintain good packaging effects, making it suitable for packaging for long-distance transportation. Moreover, PE stretch film is not easy to shred and is resistant to high temperatures.

In terms of environmental protection, PE is polyethylene, which only contains two elements: hydrocarbon and hydrogen. It is hygienic and non-toxic. PE stretch film is more environmentally friendly. For some countries with high export requirements, PE stretch film is a relatively recognized packaging material and is environmentally friendly. The performance is much higher than that of PVC stretch film.

PVC stretch film

The main material is PVC (Polyvinylchloride) as the basic material and DOA as the added plastic material. This type of stretch film relies on the heat resistance of additives, strong toughness, and good ductility. Although PVC stretch film has been replaced by other materials in the field of packaging, PVC is still an indispensable material in the production process of three-dimensional stretch film.

From an environmental perspective, PVC is polyvinyl chloride. Because it contains chlorine, it will decompose to produce hydrogen chloride when exposed to sunlight for a long time or above 100°C. Hydrogen chloride gas is produced, which is called "poisonous plastic" by Greenpeace International. The human body is toxic. However, because it is cheap and easy to manufacture, it has become the second largest general-purpose plastic in terms of output after PE.

How to tell the difference?

Method 1. The fastest method "water soaking"
The density of PE stretch film 0.91 is smaller than that of water 1.0, and it will float after being immersed in water.
The density of PVC stretch film 1.45 is higher than that of water 1.0, and it will sink when immersed in water.

Method 2. "Color"
PE wrapping film has good gloss and looks clear and transparent. Because of the presence of plasticizer, it becomes a bit white when exposed to light.
PVC wrapping film has poor transparency and is light yellow in color. The covered food will look blurry.

Method 3. "Burn with fire"
When the PE stretch film is burned, the flame will appear yellow and burn quickly, giving off the smell of burning candles.
PVC stretch film contains chlorine. When burned with fire, the flame will appear yellow-green and will not drip oil. It will be extinguished as soon as it is removed from the fire and has a strong pungent smell.
